A native of Germany, Sibylle Marquardt moved to Canada in 1997. An active chamber and orchestral player in Canada and Europe, she is also recognized for her teaching. Since the fall of 2018 Sibylle is teaching at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts. In 1998 she became a Certified Teacher on the Faculty of the Royal Conservatory of Music, joined the College of Examiners and has become a sought after adjudicator at music festivals. As well she was a visiting artist at the Etobicoke School for the Arts from 2007 - 2018, one of the designated art schools of the Toronto District School Board.
Her orchestral career began at the early age of 23, when she was regularly hired as 2nd flute/ piccolo with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Munich under Sir Colin Davis, touring to Italy and Japan. She went on to join the orchestral program of the Deutsche Oper Berlin and held a solo flute/solo piccolo position at the Freiburg Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Donald Runnicles. She was a substitute player with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Stuttgart, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Gärtnerplatz Theater Munich, Bern and Biel Symphony Orchestras. She has also played with the Windsor Symphony, the Toronto Philharmonia and the Oshawa Durham Symphony amongst others, as well as in the productions of the Phantom of the Opera and the Beauty and the Beast in Toronto.
She was a member of the ERGO Ensemble (led by composer Barbara Croall) 2000-2012, specializing in contemporary music, as well as Duo Resonance with whom she performed regularly all over Ontario. In Germany she was a founding member of Trio Resonance, which was an established ensemble at numerous high-profile concert venues and festivals throughout Germany and Switzerland. With Duo Resonance (guitarist Wilma van Berkel) she recorded the CD “From The New Village”, featuring 20th century music.
In 1994 she started the Baroque flute living in Switzerland, taking lessons with Oskar Peters at the Scola Cantorum Basiliensis, and later with Alison Melville in Toronto and Claire Guimond in Montréal. She is a member of the Camerata Basel and has performed with Nota Bene Baroque Players and Toronto Masque Theatre.
Sibylle's flute education is based on the French School and Marcel Moyse. Her main teachers include Hermann Klemeyer and Jean-Claude Gerard and she had lessons with Trevor Wye, Geoffrey Gilbert, Wolfgang Schulz, Philippe Boucly, Eric Kirchhoff and Aurèle Nicolet. She has performed in Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Japan, Italy, former Czechoslovakia and France, as well as for Radio Canada, the BR Munich and TV and movie productions.
Her students are consistent award winners at Kiwanis (Toronto/Provincials: 2nd and 3rd prizes), North York Music Festival, Peel Region Music Festival, Contemporary Showcase Festival Toronto (Mary Gardiner Award) and RC Examinations (Gold Medal). Her students were accepted into various music programs at the University of Toronto, McGill University, University of Ottawa as well as the University of Western Ontario.
Sibylle is a member of the Toronto Musicians Association, speaks English, German and French.
Cellist Paul Pulford is a chamber musician, soloist, conductor and educator. Since his debut recital in Winnipeg in 1967 he has performed on four continents and has recorded over 30 CDs.
For over 25 years Pulford pursued a passion for the string quartet, playing with the internationally acclaimed Penderecki String Quartet from 1990-2013, and Orford String Quartet from 1987-1989. With the Penderecki Quartet he recorded many CDs including the Bartok String Quartets; Brahms, Shostakovich and Schnittke Piano Quintets; the quartets of Penderecki and many works by Canadian composers.
As a quartet player, Pulford has performed in many of the great venues of the world, including Concertgebauw, Amsterdam; Wigmore Hall, London; Oratorio del Gonfalone, Rome; La Caxia, Barcelona; Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, New York City; Kennedy Centre, Washington; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Takefu Festival in Japan; Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico City; National Arts Centre, Glenn Gould Studio & St. Lawrence Centre, Canada; to name a few.
From 1989 to 2017 Pulford was Professor of Cello and Director of Orchestral Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, where he also served for seven years as Associate Dean of Music. During his tenure at Laurier he developed a professional-level orchestral training program, and taught and mentored many cellists and orchestral musicians who are now part of the professional music world in Canada and abroad. In 1991, Pulford founded QuartetFest, a festival based at Laurier that celebrates the art of the string quartet with performances by international ensembles and mentorship of emerging string quartets from around the world. Pulford remains Professor Emeritus at Laurier.
As a conductor, Pulford has worked with Symphony New Brunswick, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Canadian Chamber Ensemble, Mississauga Symphony, Stratford Symphony Orchestra and as Resident Conductor of the NUMUS Ensemble. He has conducted many premiers of new works, including Tim Brady’s opera The Salome Dancer, and Glenn Buhr’s Red Sea (2010) and Piano Concerto (2015).
Pulford maintains a passionate commitment to contemporary music through his involvement with Blue Rider Ensemble, which he co-founded in 1989. Based in Montreal, Blue Rider specializes in 20th and 21st century Instrumental Theatre works, having released a highly acclaimed CD recording of Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, premiered experimental works such as Peter Hatch’s Mounting Picasso, and created new works, including the large-scale multi-media work, Frankenstein’s Ghosts.
Pulford continues to perform and record as a soloist. He has recorded the complete works for cello and fortepiano by Beethoven (IBS Label) and Brahms (Doremi Label).
His most recent CD, Volume I, Suites 1, 2 and 3 for Solo Cello by J.S. Bach is available on iTunes. He is currently working on Volume II.
Paul was an artist-in-residence at UNB Fredericton as a member of the New Brunswick String Quartet from 1984-1989. He lives in Long Reach, New Brunswick.
Canadian pianist Todd Yaniw is a young artist praised for his “atmospheric contrast of poetry and power … a hair-raising performance”. Since his debut with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at age 13, Mr.Yaniw has performed frequently in Alberta and Ontario; at festivals and venues including the Banff Centre for Music, Edmonton’s Winspear Centre for Music, the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, Toronto’s Arts & Letters Club, the Festival of the Sound in Parry Sound, the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre and Koerner Hall. Mr.Yaniw has performed with the symphony orchestras of Edmonton, Toronto, Kitchener-Waterloo, Windsor and Guelph. Mr.Yaniw toured the Canadian maritime provinces as a soloist in February 2013, under the auspices of Debut Atlantic. Todd has been interviewed and broadcast on several occasions on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation [CBC], and Toronto’s Classical 96.3 FM. In December 2012, Todd recorded a one-hour program for the CBC as part of its NEXT series, a radio program at the Monte Carlo Opera House in Monaco, the Jamaica School of Music in Kingston, Jamaica, several concert halls in China and Italy, St.Martin-in-the-Fields and St.James’s Piccadilly in London England and the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, New York. Yaniw’s debut CD “Todd Yaniw: Scriabin, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Chopin” was released on the Chestnut Hall Music label in September 2006.
Todd’s extensive prize list includes Winner of the Roy Thomson Hall First Prize at the 2005 Toronto Symphony Volunteer Committee’s TD National Piano Competition; two-time national winner of the Canadian Music Competition, as well as silver medalist at the Eastman International Piano Competition. Mr. Yaniw has been supported by the Canada Council for the Arts, and was a recipient of the 2010 and 2012 Sylva Gelber Music Foundation Awards.
Todd Yaniw was born in Edmonton, Alberta and his teachers include Michael Massey, Dr. James Parker, Professor James Anagnoson (The Glenn Gould School), and Dr. Jon Kimura Parker (Rice University). Mr. Yaniw completed his doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin, where he worked with Dr. Anton Nel.
Nadia Francavilla, Montreal-born violinist and music educator, brings a collaborative spirit, a passion for new music, and a distinctly European sensibility to her performing and teaching work.
A graduate of McGill University, she received solid musical training under the direction of Mauricio Fuks, Raphael Druian, and Joseph Silverstein. Her orchestral background includesl’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and Les Violons du Roy, and she spent several years with Quatuor Arthur-LeBlanc and Quatuor Bozzini, producing recordings and touring in North America, Europe, and Japan. At present, she performs most often with Motion2, Atlantica, and Moineaux D’Entendre, exploring classical and contemporary works in mixed chamber music settings.
Ms. Francavilla’s driving interest in new music has led her to commission and premiere new works from both Canadian and international composers. She particularly enjoys working with young composers, sharing in their creative process and nurturing their innovative spark. Meanwhile, explorations of improvised works and frequent collaborations with visual and multimedia artists have shaped her study of music as performance art.
Ms. Francavilla has held the position of Musician in Residence at UNB since 2009 where she has worked on solo projects, given masterclasses and lectures and integrated herself into the Fredericton music scene. Ms. Francavilla is also a violin teacher at the Université de Moncton and Mount Allison University.
Energetic and insightful, Jennifer King is a versatile pianist who is equally at home on the concert stage, and in the classroom. She is also in high demand as an adjudicator, coach, and clinician; she has firmly established herself as a sought-after talent across Atlantic Canada.
Jennifer worked at Acadia University’s School of Music as the staff accompanist, a part-time piano instructor and faculty member from 2003-2016. She currently works as a private piano instructor and coach from her home studio and at the Maritime Conservatory of Music and Performing Arts in Halifax, NS. Jennifer was also the master class pianist the Young Artist Program at the Scotia Festival of Music for seven years.
Since moving back from England in 2003 where she was an active musician and teacher, Ms. King has performed in hundreds of recitals and concerts at Acadia University and as a free-lance pianist in many of the Maritime region’s concert series. Jennifer can be heard in concert alongside some of Canada’s most respected singers and musicians and as a soloist. She has performed a number of Canadian premieres recently and loves exploring new music both solo and chamber music, as well as looking to past musical hidden gems.
Ms. King holds a Masters of Music degree in solo piano performance from McGill University, a Bachelor of Music from Acadia University and has completed postgraduate diplomas at the University of Reading in the UK as well as the prestigious Royal Academy of Music in London, England. She was a scholarship holder at the Kneisal Hall Chamber Music School, “the cradle of chamber music teaching in America” in Blue Hill, Maine, and of a grant for contemporary music studies at the Britten Pears School of Advanced Musical Studies in the UK.
Her accolades include two scholarships from the Nova Scotia Talent Trust, and an Award of Appreciation from the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia in recognition of her contributions to musical life in the province. In 2016 Jennifer performed outside for 6 hours on the Halifax waterfront with artist Holly Carr for Nocturne Art at Night Festival.
Jennifer is a strong believer in community, and reaches out to the next generation of artists, and educators. She was one of the founders of the Prince Edward Island Registered Music Teachers’ Association when she was 22 years old. She was on Provincial Council for NSRMTA where she has also been the Vice President, Registrar, Second Delegate and ran the NSRMTA Provincial Scholarship Competition for 2016 and 2017. She served on the NSYO board and is a member of Canadian Federation of Adjudicators Association and Atlantic Federation of Musicians. She is married to a veterinarian and has two busy teen-aged children.
Jennifer released her first solo album of night-inspired piano music O Mistress Moon in January 2018 as part of Cecilia Concerts Series in Halifax. Since then, the album has been featured on a number of radio stations, including CBC, and she has toured throughout Nova Scotia and P.E.I. with the program. The CD can be found digitally on Leaf Music, Apple Music, iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, and Google Play. The album is nominated for an ECMA 2019 award for Classical Recording of the Year.
Jennifer is also a Pop-Up Artist for the 75th anniversary celebrations of the Nova Scotia Talent Trust. She will be performing a number of short recitals throughout the province in 2019 to promote this important scholarship granting organization for emerging talent of all artistic disciplines.
Since January 2019 Jennifer has performed at the Open Water Festival, Dartmouth Community Concert Series, Province House for the opening of Black Heritage Month, UPEI Recital Series and a Cookie Concert for Musique Royale Series.
